ABSTRACT

It is believed that kidney deficiency is the fundamental pathogenesis while liver constraint and spleen deficiency, and disharmony of chong (thorough vessel, 冲脉)and ren (conception vessel, 任脉) is the key pathogenesis of infertility patients who adopted controlled ovarian hyperstimulation of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) programme. Therefore, the method of tonifying the kidneys dominantly and treating the liver and spleen simultaneously is proposed, and Chinese herbal medicine is suggested to be used in adjuvant treatment of staged IVF-ET controlled ovrian hyperstimulation. In the regulation stage, modified Liuwei Dihuang Pill (六味地黄丸) can be used to tonify kidney and supplement essence, fortify spleen and nourish liver; in the ovulation promotion stage, modified Wenjing Decoction (温经汤) should be used to warm kidney and assist yang, dispel stasis and nourish blood; in the pre-transplantation endothelial preparation stage, modified Shenling Baizhu Powder (参苓白术散) is suggested to fortify spleen and replenish qi, invigorate blood and resolve stasis; after the transplantation stage, modified Shoutai Pill (寿胎丸) or Taiyuan Decoction (胎元饮) can be taken to fortify spleen and tonify kidney, benefit qi and nourish blood.

ABSTRACT

Astrocytes are important nerve cells in the central nervous system (CNS), which mainly play a key role in nutrition and support. Astrocytes and neurons undergo close energy coupling and substance coupling, which are closely related and interact with each other. In recent years, many studies have shown that the astrocyte-neuron coupling imbalance plays a central role in the occurrence and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and serves as an important therapeutic target receiving increasing attention. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, the main pathogenesis of AD is kidney deficiency and marrow inadequacy, and in clinical medication, kidney-tonifying and marrow-filling TCM prescriptions are often employed with satisfactory results achieved. As reported, many kidney-tonifying and marrow-filling prescriptions exhibit regulatory and protective effects on the imbalance of astrocyte-neuron coupling, suggesting that the effect of kidney-tonifying and marrow-filling prescriptions in treating AD may have some internal relationship with its regulation of the imbalance of astrocyte-neuron coupling. This article reviewed the underlying internal relationship between the imbalance of astrocyte-neuron coupling and the pathogenesis of kidney deficiency and marrow inadequacy in AD and the research progress in the intervention mechanism of TCM for tonifying the kidney and filling the marrow.

ABSTRACT

Healthy birth and child development are the prerequisite for improving the overall quality of the population. However, premature ovarian failure(POF) threatens the reproductive health of women. The incidence of this disease has been on the rise, and it tends to occur in the young. The causes are complex, involving genetics, autoimmune, infectious and iatrogenic factors, but most of the causes remain unclear. At the moment, hormone replacement therapy and assisted reproductive technology are the main clinical approaches. According to traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), kidney deficiency and blood stasis are one of the major causes of POF, and TCM with the effects of tonifying kidney and activating blood has a definite effect. Through clinical trials, TCM prescriptions for POF have excellent therapeutic effect as a result of multi-target regulation and slight toxicity. In particular, they have no obvious side effects. A large number of studies have shown that the kidney-tonifying and blood-activating TCM can regulate the neuroendocrine function of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, improve ovarian hemodynamics and microcirculation, reduce the apoptosis of granulosa cells, alleviate oxidative stress injury, and modulate immunologic balance. The mechanism is that it regulates the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase(PI3K)/protein kinase B(Akt), vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), transforming growth factor(TGF)-β/Smads, nuclear factor E2-related factor 2(Nrf2)/antioxidant response element(ARE), and nuclear factor-kappa B(NF-κB) signaling pathways. This article summarized the pathological mechanisms of tonifying kidney and activating blood TCM in the prevention and treatment of POF and explored the biological basis of its multi-pathway and multi-target characteristics in the treatment of this disease. As a result, this study is expected to serve as a reference for the treatment of POF with the tonifying kidney and activating blood therapy.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study is to explore the application of simultaneous treatment of spleen and kidney in the treatment of sarcopenia by sorting TCM literature and related research. It is believed that the location of sarcopenia is in the muscles and sinews, and the main pathological changes are located in the spleen and kidney, which is closely related to the kidney. The pathogenesis is deficiency of the spleen and kidney, muscle deprived of nourishment, and the treatment should focus on invigorating spleen and tonifying kidney. The mechanism of invigorating spleen and tonifying kidney in the treatment of sarcopenia may be related to improving mitochondrial function, reducing inflammatory factors, promoting insulin secretion and repairing muscle fibers.

ABSTRACT

The important pathogenesis of knee osteoarthritis (KOA) lies in kidney deficiency and blood stasis. Therefore, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for tonifying the kidney and activating blood circulation is widely used in clinical practise with high response. The existing literature mainly focuses on single medicine for tonifying the kidney and activating blood circulation, as well as TCM compounds, such as classic prescriptions Yougui Pill, Duhuo Jisheng Decoction, which contain TCMs for tonifying the kidney and activating blood circulation, or self-made empirical prescriptions Bushen Huoxue Recipe and Bushen Tongluo Recipe, which are based on the idea of tonifying the kidney and activating blood circulation. The above TCMs mainly regulate oxidative stress response, inflammatory cytokine level, no level, lymphatic function and microcirculation Inhibit chondrocyte apoptosis, regulate cartilage metabolism, protect and repair cartilage, and inhibit matrix degrading enzymes to play a therapeutic role.

ABSTRACT

With the advance of aging in the world, aging and its relevant cardiovascular diseases have become an important concern for medical care. Aging is a universal and multifactorial process characterized by a gradual decline in physiological functions, cell dysfunction and a variety of diseases. Telomere shortening is currently a hallmark of vascular aging. The shortening of telomere length is accelerated by exposure to smoking, obesity and other factors. Telomere shortening and dysfunction play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of senile-related cardiovascular diseases. Cardiovascular risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and stress are considered to increase oxidative stress or inflammation, accelerate the shortening of telomeres, and protect the healthy telomere length. Previous studies have also shown that telomere shortening is closely related to atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. This may be an effective biomarker for the risk stratification of cardiovascular disease. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM), human aging and kidney deficiency are accompanied. The heart and kidney are interrelated and mutually constrained for coordinating water and fire. Impaired heart function due to kidney deficiency and self-aging can cause relevant cardiovascular diseases. The study found that TCM or prescriptions for activating blood circulation to remove blood stasis and many kidney-reinforcing TCM or prescriptions are likely to affect cardiovascular diseases by altering telomere length and telomerase activity. In today' s aging society, TCM for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis and tonifying kidney from the perspective of telomere is of great significance for the pathological mechanism of cardiovascular diseases.
